‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is proud to offer you this amazing 427ci SOHC ‘Cammer’ motor, freshly built by Ernie Elliott of Dawsonville, GA. Hailed as ‘Ford’s Greatest Engine Ever’, the Single Overhead Cam 427ci motor (SOHC pronounced ‘Sock’) was based on Ford’s 427ci side-oiler block, and was intended to be Ford’s two-valve, single-overhead-cam, high-rpm answer to Chrysler’s 426ci Hemi for NASCAR in 1964. But racing these purpose-built engines turned ‘stock cars’ into ‘non-stock cars’ creating a situation that NASCAR moved to permanently ban. NASCAR’s ban left Ford in the position of having an exotic racing engine with no venue. The development and investment Ford Engine & Foundry Division had in creating the ‘Cammer’ components meant the engine had to go somewhere, so with completed parts on the shelves, Ford took the ‘Cammer’ drag racing and provided engine deals to Pete Robinson, Kenz and Leslie, Connie Kalitta, Tom Hoover, and Lou Baney. And so the legend began. Today, a powerful mystique surrounds these legendary motors, and they are still sought after by drag racers and gear heads of all types.
