After 15 years of selling high-end classic cars, muscle cars & hot rods, I can safely say that this 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle, dubbed ‘Project Z0-66’, is in my Top 5 all-time coolest muscle car list!
‘Red Hills Rods & Choppers’ has always been all about the ‘numbers matching’ original cars, but when I laid my eyes on this Z0-66 Resto-Mod, my jaw dropped and my mind starting reeling! This 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Resto-Mod is absolutely awesome! The $100,000+ project started w/ a beautiful 12,000 actual mile car, which underwent a concours nut & bolt restoration/build by Roger Ausley of ‘Ausley’s Chevelle Parts’ w/ final assembly done by Doug Garrett. An entire photo album documenting the process comes with the car. The sheet metal work is exceptional and the body panels are laser straight all the way around the car. It was painted in its factory original color (Code C) Ermine White (two-stage), which was sanded & buffed to a mirror-like finish. All of the chrome & bright work is outstanding. You can walk around this car over & over again and never find a bad angle. She is absolutely beautiful!
When you slide into the interior, you will swear that it is 1966 all over again! Finished in its factory correct (Code 775) Turquoise vinyl/cloth, the entire interior is restored to ‘as new’ condition from front to back. From the two-spoke wood steering wheel to the correct ‘tissue holder’, this beautiful stock interior is stunning! All of the gauges, lights, blinkers, etc. work perfectly. Even the lighter pops out hot! The only item that is not bone-stock is the AM/FM radio (sounds great), which blends in nicely and does not distract in any way.
Now, let’s get to the heart of this beast, shall we? Open the hood and nestled inside the beautifully detailed engine bay resides a 7.0 Liter LS-7 V8 GM powerplant linked to a 6L80 6-Speed automatic overdrive transmission, which feeds power to a narrowed 9” Ford posi rear axle w/ 3.70 gears. A short list of additional features include: custom headers from Street and Performance, custom aluminum driveshaft, custom aluminum radiator from Tapp Inc., Pypes stainless-steel exhaust system, 4-wheel power disc brakes, power steering, stainless steel gas tank, one-off custom dry sump tank disguised as an AC Delco Red Cap battery, and on & on! She sits on original 15” steel wheels w/ dog-dish hubcaps and Firestone Super Sport F70-15 Redline tires, which really complete the look. This 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle appears to be the ultimate concours restored ‘stocker’ until you drive it! This car is scary fast! She’s got tons of power & torque but is quite civilized when you just want to cruise. The power steering and 4-wheel power disc brakes make driving around town effortless, but when you drop your right foot down, watch out! The odometer shows 12,450 original miles since new, with less than 200 miles since the LS-7 powerplant conversion.
Extensive documentation includes: original Protecto-Plate, original warranty booklet, original Owners Manual, complete photo-album from restoration and piles of receipts for parts & work performed.
Again, this is one of the coolest cars that I have ever had the pleasure of owning, and is a true ‘Show & Go’ machine if there ever was one! Someone is going to get an incredible one-of-a-kind 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Resto-Mod that will not be duplicated.
