Camaro RS Z28

SOLD!

The name Z/28 will be forever linked w/ the Chevrolet Camaro, a simple 3-digit GM sales code for a ‘Special Performance Package’ that was introduced in December, 1966. GM wanted to compete w/ the Ford Mustang in the Trans Am series, recently created by the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America). The SCCA had specific rules regarding engine size, and GM’s engines at the time were either too large (over 305ci), or too under powered (6-cylinders) to compete. The beauty of early GM engines was the ability to swap parts to enhance their power, and Chevrolet engineer Vince Piggins did just that. He used a 327ci block and installed a crankshaft from a 283ci motor, making a ‘stroker’ engine w/ a 4” cylinder bore that gave the new engine a cubic-inch displacement of 302.4, which slid in under the SCCA’s rules. Chevrolet announced that their new motor produced 290hp, but in reality, with the addition of a radical performance camshaft, a single 4-barrel carburetor and factory headers hooked up to a 3” exhaust, the engines were putting out closer to 360hp @ the rear wheels. By 1969, Camaro Z/28’s incorporated a larger hood w/ forced air induction, w/ available options such as front disc brakes, 15” wheel package, and suspension upgrades that included front coil springs, and a more rigid rear multi-leaf spring set-up, which proved that not only could the Z/28 dominate the ‘stockers’ at the ¼-mile strip, but was also a leader on the road/track circuits.
