1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440-6

SOLD!

The introduction of the E-Body cars in 1970 showed that Dodge & Plymouth were at their absolute peak in the American muscle car wars. No other automobile is more indicative of that magical era than the 1970 Dodge Challenger & 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda. The Dodge Challenger arrived on showroom floors in September 1969, as a 1970 model, however it was actually born years earlier in the Highland Park section of Detroit @ Chrysler’s design studios. Stylists Bill Brownlie & Carl Cameron brought the Challenger to life under the direction of legendary designer Elwood Engle. The fresh & exciting design wasn’t like your typical Valiant/Dart based compact, but was a true ‘pony car’ that excited the senses. To handle the kind of power that the Challenger was going to have, Chrysler engineers had to make the E-Body a hybrid of different platforms. It needed large-car underpinnings, yet needed to be akin to the Valiant/Dart in size. To say that they succeeded on every level is an understatement! The magnificent car that you are looking at right now is the perfect example of just how successful they were.

‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is very proud to offer you this absolutely gorgeous, all #’s matching and heavily documented 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 Six Pack! This is a very special car folks, w/ complete owner history back to day one. There were 1,640 440-6 Pack Challenger R/T’s built in 1970, and only (55) known examples came w/ the N96 Shaker Hood. The exact number of 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T models that were built w/ the N96 Shaker Hood option is debated, but it’s generally accepted to be a relatively small number due to its early suspension issues. Initially offered in the 1970 model year, the Shaker Hood was quickly recalled due to safety concerns, making its reappearance later in the model year w/ a redesigned hood. This means any 1970 Challenger R/T equipped with the factory Shaker Hood is considered rare, much less a 440-6 Pack equipped car. According to the GTS paperwork, this car is (1) of only (2) known to exist that left the factory in the amazing color combination of Sublime (FJ5), (V6W) white longitudinal stripe, (V1W) white vinyl top, and a (H6XW) white & black vinyl interior. Combine that w/ all of the other desirable factory options, and she is a (1) of (1) in the GTS Registry. If you then factor in the all #’s matching drivetrain, it’s stunning condition, and the plethora of original documentation, including (2) original build sheets, well I believe that the term ‘ultra-rare’ would not be out of line.

This gorgeous Challenger was originally ordered by Matt Reichert, owner of Reichert Dodge in Georgetown, Illinois, as a ‘Dealer Demo’ (Code Y13) w/ 26 cost options, and was a gift for his wife Leila. She & Matt enjoyed the car up until August, 1971, when it was sold to Craig Young, a young mechanic who worked @ Koehn Motors, and who actually became the first registered owner. Again, we have full ownership history from then up until now, w/ copies of ownership titles & mileage statement documents from each owner. The cherry on top? We have been in close contact w/ Craig Young, the original owner, and have had the pleasure of hearing all about his experience w/ the car when he first bought it. She now sits on our showroom floor here in St. George, Utah, in collector-grade condition w/ only 50,339 original miles. The car was subject to a professional comprehensive restoration in the early 2000’s, using mainly all NOS parts throughout. The bodywork & paint are simply stellar, w/ super straight body panels and precise gaps. The correct Sublime (FJ5) paint is absolutely beautiful w/ a brilliant shine throughout, and all of the chrome & stainless trim are in show quality condition as well. The white vinyl top is in perfect condition and still looks new. She rolls on original Rallye Wheels (W21) wrapped w/ Goodyear GT E60-15 Polyglas tires, just like she did 55 years ago. You can walk around this car a hundred times and it looks absolutely perfect from every angle. She is an absolute show-stopper folks!

When you open the driver’s door, and slide inside the absolutely pristine & factory correct white & black vinyl bucket seat interior (H6XW), it feels like it’s 1970 all over again! The interior is in excellent condition from front to back and from side to side, and all of the original gauges, lights, blinkers, clock, radio, etc., are in perfect working order. Nothing compares to sitting in these beautiful white bucket seats staring out over that awesome Shaker Hood!

Now let’s get to the heart of this beast, shall we?

When you pull the pins and open the hood, nestled inside the beautifully detailed engine bay you will find the factory original #’s matching 440ci Six Pack motor, which was completely rebuilt during the restoration. The original 440-6 motor is linked to the factory original #’s matching TorqueFlite 727 automatic transmission, which was completely rebuilt during the restoration as well, which feeds power to the factory original 8 ¾” (A36 Performance Axle Package) sure-grip rear end w/ 3.55 gear ratio. She fires right up, settling into a nice smooth idle, and she runs very strong & drives beautifully in every way. As I previously mentioned, she is fully documented w/ original paperwork that includes: (2) original build sheets, dealership purchase invoice w/ trade-in receipt, warranty paperwork, full ownership history w/ copies of titles & mileage statements from day one, Galen Govier GTS paperwork, and more!

This is an investment-grade muscle car in every sense of the term, and checks all of the boxes when it comes to being a true ‘collector car’. When you factor in the amazing color combination, the all #’s matching drivetrain, the bullet-proof original documentation, and the overall rarity of being a true (1) of (1) car as optioned, well, I can safely say that it would be very hard to beat this absolutely stunning 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 Six Pack!
